HEIRESS

A complete girl-group record in today's commercial pop lane, written and produced end to end — five songs, a full world built before anyone was cast. No act attached, which is the opportunity: if you're building a group, or already have one, this is the work I'd bring to it.

Listen

Written and produced start to finish — lyric, melody, arrangement, mix. Anything here can be cut by your artist as it stands, or written from scratch to fit them. The Heiress EP plays in its own section above.

Anywhere.

Dance records and slow ones. Songs for a full room and songs for a quiet one.

Commercial pop is the target — hooks, structure, something you can sing back on one listen. Jazz harmony, classical form and drum languages from four continents are how it gets there, and why it should still work in ten years.

Ideas can arrive in pieces. The skill is hearing which ones belong to the same thing — the sound, the look, the room it lives in — and getting there fast enough that it still feels found.

Studio

HAKEZE is Earl Cole — a producer, songwriter and composer in Los Angeles, working in the commercial and cinematic pop lanes.

The foundation is jazz and classical, with rock, soul and hip-hop in the hands and orchestration for picture. Above it is the way pop and R&B records were built in the nineties and early two-thousands, and rhythm and phrasing pulled in from wherever the song wants it — fused into the record rather than quoted on top of it.

The subject is always human — the small admissions people don't usually make out loud, scored like they matter.

The room

Keys first, then the arrangement is built around what was played. Everything comes out of a studio in Los Angeles.

Most of the work is deciding what not to keep. Space is doing something — a part that isn’t holding weight comes out, however good it sounded going in.

Vocals here are demo performances — the writing, production, arrangement and mix are finished. Stems are on hand, and any song can be re-cut with your artist.

Work starts from my own idea or from someone else’s brief.
